45 Years of Antics Reviews

NZ Wilderness

The design and production are simply first-class, the selections of stories and illustrations brilliant, and the photograph reproduction is top notch. I’ve been chuckling my way through it, and reckon you’ve produced something sorely needed in tramping literature: an account of club exploits that is highly readable, amusing, and a great record of all the exuberance and activity that clubs generate. Well done!

Otago Daily Times

From start to finish, nevertheless, this is a book full of fun and “antics” galore…The book is heavily illustrated with a blend of people, pictures and scenic shots. A pack-load of interesting stories come from earlier times – many scattered with well-known names from the southern tramping and climbing firmament…Others keen on tramping and the mountains of the South will also find plenty to amuse and interest them.

FMC Bulletin, March 2007

In the forewords to his A Tramper’s Journey’ (reviewed in Bulletin 159), Mark Pickering bemoans the scarcity of books of tramping tales. His own helps to fill the gap, and is now joined in resounding fashion by 45 Years of Antics…NZ Wilderness magazine had a list of 20 top outdoor reads last year. If they reprint it they will need to expand it to 21.

The Climber

The many many stories, trip reports, lists, poems, cartoons and
photographs assembled in 45 Years of Antics were selected and edited by
long-time OUTC member, Kelvin Lloyd, who provides a measured account of
the club’s development and high profile members and events in his
introduction. Like their authors, the writings collected in 45 Years of
Antics tend to be jam-packed full of enthusiasm and a bit
unconventional. When you crack this book open, you be confronted by just
about anything. Lloyd deserves a medal for corralling all of these
vibrant memories into such a stylish and entertaining celebration of
OUTC’s history and culture (although you might want to think carefully
about the possible consequences of exposing your local teenager to the
exciting and chaotic possibilities suggested in 45 Years of Antics).
