Muesli Mag - Semester 2 2019

Welcome to the Muesli Mag for Semester 2 2019! This is a guide to all the major club events planned for the semester. Trips and events will also be advertised through our email list, website and Facebook. The $20 ($25 for full year) membership cost gets you free club gear hire, a copy of the annual yearbook, Antics, and 15% off at Bivouac Outdoor on George St. Any questions can be answered by a senior member, in particular Charlotte at president@outc.org.nz


Friday 12th July / Tues 16th July

Tramping Club meetings, held in the gear room located to your right as you enter the OUSA Clubs and Societies building (5.00-6.00pm on Tuesdays, 12:30-1:30pm on Fridays). Meetings will continue every Tuesday and Friday until the end of Semester (meetings are not compulsory, they’re for people to sign up, rent gear, or come and have a chat to us).


Tues 16th July

Bushball trip pre-meet at 7.00pm in Burns 2 lecture theatre. You must go to this meeting to get a place on the trip.


Thurs 18th July

Bivouac Gear Buy Night at 6.00-8.00pm. Club exclusive

night with 20% off retail (up from the usual 15%) at the Bivouac store on George St.


Sat 20th July - Sun 21st July (evening)

The club’s infamous Bushball is a weekend trip held at Aspiring Hut (Wanaka region). This involves a short walk to the hut with a few festivities along the way and finishes with a ball.

Stayed tuned! *To go on this trip you must attend Pre-meet on Tuesday.*


Tues 23rd July

OUTC Happy Hour starts up again! Meet us at the Bog at 6pm for discounted beer, free hot chips and some quality chat.


Tuesday Walkies (23rd July, 6th August)

Can’t commit to a weekend away or want something a little closer to home? We’ll be heading out on a couple of chill afternoon walks around the city, open to all abilities. More info. will be sent via email.


Fri 26th July - Sunday 28th July

The inaugural OUTC / CUTC (Canterbury Uni Tramping Club) combined trip to the Ohau region. More details to come.


Fri 2nd August - Sun 4th August

This year our annual Conservation Trip will involve a trip to the beautiful Fox River on the west coast, to help our Department of Conservation with important landfill cleanup efforts.


Sat 10th August

Our weekly small trips start up, lead by keen OUTC trampers. Check out our website for our itinerary, and keep an eye on the email list!


14th August

Avalanche awareness evening, hosted by Bivouac Dunedin. Head along to the Otago Pioneer Women’s Hall on Moray Place to hear about how to keep yourself safe this winter.


Copland Trip (25th -29th August)

This trip takes place in the mid-semester break over 3-4 days. The Copland hot pools are a good reward after a 7-hour walk. The rest of the trip involves seeing the sights of Westland and Arthurs Pass.


Snowcraft

An introduction to snow skills, such as the use of ice axes, crampons and basic avalanche awareness for keen members who are interested in future leadership positions. This will be held in the Awakino ski area. Dates TBC.


28th September - 29th September

Rockcraft, a weekend where you can learn the basics of rock-climbing at a local Dunedin climbing spot. More details at a later date.


OUTC Merch

Club merch is available to purchase during the gear hour, but get in quick as we only have limited stock! This includes buffs, patches, hoodies, t-shirts, shorts, fleeces, beanies, and more. For more info check out www.outc.org.nz/merch.


Antics

Been on any trips recently? We’d love to hear about them! Antics is our annual journal filled with stories submitted by trampers. For more information email antics@outc.org.nz.


Federated Mountain Clubs

Did you know bundled with club membership are a load of discounts due to our affiliation with the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ? This includes $30 off an annual hut pass at DOC (requires an FMC card). For more deals see www.fmc.org.nz/discount-card/.


Thursday Bivouac trail running sessions

For the people that love to run, every Thursday night a squad heads for the trails, different every week. This advertised on the OUTC Facebook page. Send signal with your brews! First run of the semester is this Thursday 12th meet at Logan Park High School at 6:00pm!

Happy Hour

Come down to the bog at 6pm every Tuesday to catch up with your tramping chums and have some free chips (and ‘slightly’ discounted beer). Happy hour will start on the 17th of July.


Avalanche Awareness NZ night 17th July

Hosted by Bivouac Outdoor, Tuesday July 17th at the Otago Pioneer Women’s Hall, 362 Moray Place, doors open at 6.00pm, be quick as seats are limited. You can purchase tickets for $5.00 at Bivouac Outdoor 171 George Street, opposite Farmers.


Adventure racing

New club created by Tom Spencer. If you are interested join the facebook group ‘Otago University Adventure Racing Club’ This is a multi discipline sport, which involves rogaining, trekking, mountain biking, kayaking and packrafting. They train weekly on wednesday nights.


Wednesday rock climbing

Every week we head to long beach for a climb! We supply all of the gear and the carpooling is arranged by the climbers. Meeting place is at the OUSA building. More information can be found on the OUTC rock climbing page. This will start once daylight savings has ended.
