Muesli Mag - Semester One 2020




Kia ora, welcome to the Otago University Tramping Club [OUTC]. This is the 2020 Semester One Muesli Mag, your guide to all the major events planned for the semester! (See back) Trips and events will also be advertised through our email list, website and Facebook, so keep your eye on this. The $20 ($25 for full year) membership cost gets you free club gear hire, access to club trips, a copy of our annual yearbook ‘Antics’, and 15% off at the Bivouac Outdoor store on George St. Feel free to ask the exec any questions you might have! This can either be done over email to Maddy (president@outc.org.nz) or just message the Facebook page.

GEAR HOUR:

The OUTC gear room, located on the right as you enter the OUSA Clubs and Socs building on Albany St, is open on Tuesdays 5-6 pm and Fridays 12:30-1:30pm. This is the place to come if you want to hire or return gear, sign up to the club, or just have a chat.


HAPPY HOUR @ The Bog

OUTC happy hour is on Tuesdays from 6 pm at the Bog on George St. You’ll find free hot chips and cheap beer, and it’s where we share tales and photos from trips and plan more adventures!


WEEKLY TRAIL RUNNING

A group of keen runners hit Dunedin’s trails every Tuesday. More info on the Facebook group, OUTC Trail Runners.


WEEKLY ROCK CLIMBING

Each Thursday, weather-dependent, OUTC climbers head out to Long Beach for some climbing. Some belay and top-roping experience required. We carpool out there and most gear is provided. Keep an eye on the climbers Facebook group, OUTC Rock Climbers, for details.


WEEKLY WALKIES:

Each week there will be a group of OUTC members walking some of the tracks around Dunedin. Keep your eye on the Facebook page and emails for more info.


WEEKEND TRIPS

Most weekends there will be small groups heading out to the hills somewhere. These are advertised over the Facebook group and email list. Members are also encouraged to organise their own trips! Make a post on the Facebook page or email the mailing list (lists@outc.org.nz) to find some pals. Senior members are on hand for trip ideas during gear hour.


BETHUNES FRESHER BBQ: Sunday 23rd February

A social Sunday walk over Mt Cargill to Bethunes Gully at the end of O-Week followed by a BBQ. This event is specifically for kiwis who are new to the club to meet some other like-minded trampers and get to know more of what our clubs is about, all skill levels welcome. Transport is provided. Meet at 2pm outside the Clubs & Soc’s building, 84 Albany Street.


PARADISE [Arthur’s Pass]: Friday 28th February – Sunday 1st March

The first major club trip this year is to the beautiful Arthur’s Pass region! We split into smaller groups for all experience-levels on Saturday and then return to camp for a cooking competition and late night festivities including worm wrestling! On Sunday we do a river crossing course before heading heading back to Dunedin. To go on this trip you must attend the pre-meet on Tuesday 25th February at 7pm in Burns 1 lecture theatre.


Bivouac gear buy night: Date TBC

If you need to buy any gear, we have a Bivouac gear buy night, with 20% discounts on gear. It’ll be early in the semester, keep your eye out for more details. Outside of this night, OUTC members also get 15% off at Bivouac.


River crossing course: Wednesday 11th March

If you want to come on the Fiordland tramp you need to have done our river crossing course! We’ll be doing this course on the Sunday of Paradise, and another one in an evening between Paradise and Fiordland in case you’ve missed out on Paradise. The river crossing course is free and transport will be provided. Keep your eye on the Facebook page and email list for more information.


Fiordland: Friday 13th to Sunday 15th March

Fiordland has some of the most stunning tramping NZ has to offer. There will be a variety of overnight trips available for different experience levels. To go on the trip you must have done our river crossing course first, and attended the pre-meet on Tuesday 10th March at 7pm in Burns 1 lecture theatre.


Makarora: Date TBC

This trip to the Wanaka area will be held sometime in the first semester. Keep your eye on our Facebook page and emails for more info.


TWALK: Date TBC

Who needs sleep anyway? TWALK is a 24 hour team orienteering event run by our friends up at the Canterbury University Tramping Club (CUTC). It is usually held in early to mid May, and costumes are a must! Keep a look out for more info on our Facebook page and emails.


Rockcraft: Weekend of March 7th

Want to learn how to rock climb or need a bit of a refresher? This rock climbing course for beginners will be held sometime this semester. Details will be given on our Facebook page and emails.


Bushcraft: Date TBC

Learn to navigate in NZ’s backcountry, skip over terrain and gain your Bear Grylls survival skills at our Bushcraft course. Details will be advertised on our Facebook page and emails later this semester.


Cave Rave: Date TBC

Come boogey with us down at Long Beach! Feel sand between your toes whilst you dance the night away. Stay tuned for details.
